Product Description
For five generations, Thunder Acres has grown wheat on the plains of Kansas. Thunder Acres ships directly to the consumer. This enables us to have full control over the entire production process. In addition to baling the straw, we harvest the grain which is used for cat-grass or wheat grass. We also sell wheat grass growing kits, hedge apples, alfalfa hay, raw cotton, coco coir, and grow trays. Our farm prides itself on using sustainable farming methods which ensures that our farm will be viable for generations to come. We welcome any questions about our farm, our products, or agriculture in general.
Coconut Coir vs. Peat Moss
Here at Thunder Acres we are big advocates of helping our environment. This is why we pick coconut coir to sell to our customers instead of peat moss. The harvesting of peat moss is destroying the wetlands. The wetlands are the most threatened ecosystem on earth.Coconut coir is a great soil amendment to use as a replacement to peat moss.
About Coconut Coir
Coir comes compressed into 1.5 lbs. bricks, which makes for easy and convenient storage. A fully-hydrated brick will hold eight to ten times its volume in water. Coco Coir has a neutral pH of 5.8–6.8. It can help break up hard clay soils so that nutrients can be used more efficiently.
What Is Coconut Coir?
Thunder Acres Coconut Coir is a 100% natural by-product of coconut harvest. Coir consists of the coarse fibers extracted from the husk on the outer shell of a coconut. Coir has superior water holding capacity allowing for excellent air space and drainage.
How Do I Use Coconut Coir?
Coir can be used soil amendment for potted plants, containers and gardens and is a sustainable alternative to peat moss. Add water and soak your brick for at least 20 min before using it. Coir is easier to hydrate and lasts longer in soil than peat moss. Adding one part coir to two parts soil or potting mix containing compost creates and excellent growing medium for gardens, planters, and raised beds.
