How to Sprout Seeds in a Jar

1. Day 1: Into a 32 ounce (800 ml) jar, add 2 tbsp of seeds

2. Fill 1/2 jar up with filtered water. Seeds tend to clump up, so you can take a spoon and mix them around a little bit, give them a chance to evenly spread out in the water.

3. Cover jar with a stainless steel sprouting lid (mesh lid), or a cheese cloth secured with a rubber band. Let seeds soak overnight.

4. Day 2: In the morning, without taking off the lid, drain out the soak water. Add fresh filtered water and rinse the seeds twice. Swish the jar around, so all seeds are thoroughly washed.

5. Drain out all water. In order to prevent clumping up, spin the jar around to spread out seeds onto the walls. If the seeds are clumped up together, they might retain extra moisture, which eventually will cause them to rot, that’s why its important to keep them at a single layer.

6. Place jar in a dark place, either a pantry or a kitchen cabinet (at room temp). Jar should be placed upside down at an angle, so the excess water can easily drain out. Use a cup or a bowl to support the jar. In about 6-8 hours, rinse the seeds twice and place them back into a dark place.

7. Days 2-4: Repeat the same process, that is rinsing seeds twice a day and placing them into a dark pantry. Up until this point, the sprouts will be yellow in color. You also might notice white fuzz around your seeds- dont panic, it is not mold! It is celia hairs, indicating that the seeds are thirsty, once rinsed, fuzz will be gone.

Day 5-7: Rinse your seeds twice in the morning, however now you will relocate them onto a fairly lit location (but not under direct sunlight). Sprouts will now green up. Repeat rinse in the evening.

8. Day 8: Harvest time. At this point your jar should be filled up with nice green sprouts. Some seeds will not germinate, it is normal!

Remove sprouts from the jar. You can either give them a bath in a bowl with water, or just shake them so the seeds separate from the sprouts. Enjoy fresh for 5 days, or freeze in zip-bags to later use in a smoothie. Store fresh sprouts in a glass container in a fridge.
